Sundays Kids in Nature (K.I.N) Club

Join our K.I.N. Club for 8 afternoons of playful outdoor exploration and creative discovery! The 3rd Sunday of each month, April -November from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, each session will feature hands-on activities including hikes, games, crafts, and stories.  A special award will be given to each child that attends all 8 sessions!  This program series, led by Naturalist Sara Mayes, is for elementary- aged children accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Saturdays – A Story and A Stroll

Enjoy nature with your little one the 3rd Saturday of each month May – November from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. Bring your child or grandchild (toddler to age 4) for a nature-themed storytime followed by a wonder-filled walk through the preserve with Naturalist, Sara Mayes. Our beautiful trails are easily walkable and all-terrain urban stroller friendly. Rain or shine.

Brandwein Institute Summer Science Camp Program 2021

Summer Science Camp registration has reopened to allow for a total of 50 children each week.

July 12-16, 2021
July 19-23, 2021

Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at the Brandwein Nature Learning Preserve

Hands-on field-based nature and science education led by Master Teacher Kasey Stankunas.

Grades 1 to 6 — Hands-on field-based nature and science education. The activities will be split by age group, Grades 1-3 and Grades 4-6.

  • Monday – Friday, July 12 – 16 (Observing Nature)
  • Monday – Friday, July 19 – 23 (Citizen Science Investigations)

Grades 7 to 9 – Scientist-in-Training (SIT) hands-on research at Brandwein Summer Science Program. Participants will spend a portion of each day as a SIT working closely with an experienced group leader and local science experts researching natural phenomena.

  • Monday – Friday, July 12 – 16 (Research questions and Experiment design)
  • Monday – Friday, July 19 – 23 (Data collection and results presentations)

$175 for 1 week, $250 for 2 weeks Discounts for more than 1 child in family

Location:  The Summer Science Program will be held at the Brandwein Nature Learning Preserve (BNLP), 400 Minisink Turnpike, Port Jervis, New York. Signs will be posted on Minisink Turnpike directing parents to the drop off area.

Times: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily.  Parents are expected to drop off children and pick them up promptly.

Meals and Snacks: Participants are expected to provide their own lunch, beverage, and snacks. The Brandwein Institute will provide water.

Incidentals: Participants should bring a small backpack, face mask, water bottle, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Cost and Registration: The cost for the five-day science program is $175 for one week and $250 for two weeks. The family discount cost for a second child is $125 for one week and $200 two weeks. (Payment by credit card at https://squareup.com/store/Brandwein-Institute).

Maximum Number of participants for Grades 1-6 in the Science Program is 25.
Maximum number of participants for Grades 7-9 in the Science Program is 10.

  • APR. 25 -Annual Preserve Clean-up sponsored by the Tri-State Geocaching Club with Kevin Devizia from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. For adults and children 5 and older with parent.
  • MAY 2 – Welcoming Bluebirds Learn about bluebirds and how to help them as we walk our new Bluebird Trail with Sara Mayes. From 1 pm to3 pm.
  • JUNE 6 – Art in Nature I. Create art inspired by the colors and patterns found in nature, with Sara Mayes from 1pm to 3pm. For children 5 and older with parent.
  • AUG. 29 -Trails at Twilight Enjoy a guided exploration of our trails as nature settles into evening. Led by Sara Mayes from 7 pm to 9 pm.
  • SEPT. 12 -Be a Rockhound A fun, hands-on introduction to rock collecting led by Sara Mayes. From 1 pm to 3 pm. For children 5 and older with parent.
  • Oct. 3 – Art in Nature II Create ephemeral art using natural objects. From 1 pm to 3 pm. Led by Sara Mayes For children 5 and older with parent.
  • Oct. 10 – Intermediate and Advanced Geocaching Led For children 5 and older with parent. by Kevin Devizia From 1 pm to 3 pm.
  • Oct. 24 – Birds of Prey Up Close Led by Bill Streeter of Delaware Valley Raptors from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. For children 5 and older with parent. For families of all ages.

All programs in 2021 will adhere to NY State Covid-19 regulations. Social distancing, masks, hand sanitization and other precautions will be applied. Our programs will require pre-registration and group sizes will be strictly adhered to.
